Letter to the Editor: Chalkless cues tipped to transform snooker - February 2005

http://www.sportandtechnology.com/images/nl22lettertotheed1.jpgDear Editor,

Having spotted the letter from Steve Davis regarding chalkless tips (see Letter to the Editor: Snooker loopy, technology nuts are we? December 2004 ), I am writing to say that a chalkless tip has indeed been invented and early versions are available (see www.chalklesspoolcuetip.com).

The chalkless tip is made from a unique polymer, specifically designed to have greater static friction properties than a leather tip with chalk. In addition, very slight deformation during contact with the cue ball, ensures a larger surface area of contact, thus increasing the adhesion or grip between tip and cue ball.

The player controls the cue ball by imparting spin. Greater adhesion between the chalkless tip and the cue ball increases the ability to impart spin and allows for better control of the cue ball. It also lessens the chance of a miscue.

An important property of the chalkless tip is its inherent molecular memory. It maintains itshttp://www.sportandtechnology.com/images/nl22lettertotheed2.jpg shape even after extended play without the need for constant reshaping and does not suffer from mushrooming.

As yet they are unsuitable for use in snooker and have received mixed reviews from players.

Research is ongoing and an improved version should be available within two to three months.
