> The 18th FIFA World Cup began in Germany on Friday, 9 June and ends on Sunday, 9 July.
> Only seven nations have won the World Cup. Brazil has a record five wins (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002).
> (West) Germany has reached a record seven finals, winning three (1954, 1974 and 1990).
> Argentina (1978, 1986), England (1966), France (1998), Italy (1934, 1938, 1982) Uruguay (1930, 1950) have also won.
> The last nation to win the World Cup as hosts was France in 1998.
 
Volvo Ocean Race

> The Volvo Ocean Race was originally called the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race and was first held in 1973.
> The race was conceived and organised by the Royal Naval Sailing Association.
> This year’s race will be won by Dutch boat ABN AMRO 1, which gained an unassailable lead after seven of the eight legs.
> In this year’s race, ABN AMRO 2 crew member Hans Horrevoets died after going overboard during the seventh leg.
> During that same leg, the keel of the Movistar broke free and the crew had to abandon the boat, which later sunk.

> The 2006 Monaco Grand Prix was held at the end of May and was won by World Champion Fernando Alonso.
> In 2005, Kimi Räikkönen won the Monaco Grand Prix in dominating style as he led the race from start to finish.
> In 1996, only three cars finished the race because of terrible weather conditions.
> No driver has won more times in Monaco than Ayrton Senna (six). Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher won five times.
> Alberto Ascari and Paul Hawkins are the only two drivers to have ever driven into the harbour adjacent to the track.

David Coulthard

> At the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix, David Coulthard made his 200th career start in Formula One.
> The Scotsman has won 13 races in his Formula One career.
> Coulthard is one of only five drivers who have gained more than 500 points in Formula One.
> Coulthard is also one of only five drivers who have raced over 10,000 laps in Formula One.
> Coulthard has had 61 podium finishes at the time of writing. Only Senna, Prost and Michael Schumacher have finished in the top three more often.
