Sports photos delivered in 20 seconds

EMPICS, a UK-based sports photography company, has announced new technology that delivers sports pictures to websites and mobile phones in 20 seconds from the moment the picture is taken to when it appears. The process, called New Media Stills Production (NMSP) is substantially faster than the five to eight minutes that EMPICS' competitors take to deliver images to their picture desks, where they require further processing and onward dispatch. The process has been successfully tested at soccer's English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Football League matches. Most recently, it was used at cricket's Twenty20 Cup and the Open Golf Championship in the UK. As it uses wireless application protocol (WAP), which is commonly available on mobile phones, the NMSP service is compatible with any WAP picture phone, and does not require a 3G handset. It can also be used to send photos to mobile phones using picture messaging, or Multimedia Message Services (MMS). Meanwhile, mobile operators Vodafone and Hutchison 3 and the UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB are believed to have tendered competing bids to acquire the rights to show highlights of English Premier League soccer matches across 3G mobile telephones, for three seasons staring with 2004-05. The Premier League is offering an exclusive package to mobile operators that will allow companies to screen highlights and clips of matches five minutes after the final whistle. Vodafone has already acquired mobile phone rights for the German Bundesliga in a two-year deal whereas Hutchison 3 holds the 3G rights of six Italian Serie A clubs.
